Introduction to Jewelry Casting: Lost Wax Casting with Fine Metals

5-Week Session
Tuesdays 4:00 – 6:00 pm
April 22 – May 20, 2025*

In this weekly evening class students will learn the ancient art of lost wax casting and jewelry making!  Starting with wax carving and wax sculpting we will walk through the process of making a piece of jewelry. Wax models will be created by the students then sent off for casting.  In later sessions we will receive the rough castings and focus on finishing a piece of jewelry.  Techniques will involve initial cleanup and sprue removal, metalwork, metal finishing, pre polish and final polishing. 

Students will design and create a number of different pieces throughout the four sessions. Ancient Bronze and Sterling silver will be available for castings.

This class is open to students 16 years of age and older.
Skill Level: 1-3, all are welcome.

*Class meetings: 4/22, 4/29, 5/13, and 5/20 (note: class will not meet on 5/2/2025 but students are welcome to utilize the studio on this day)

Instructor Bio

Will Nevins-Alderfer is a designer, maker, and business owner who blends ancient metalsmithing techniques with modern tools and technologies. He has a rich background in metalworking and stone setting, with over 15 years of metalsmithing experience in a wide variety of materials. Will’s technical know-how and artistic vision provide the foundation for W.R. Metalarts, a values-driven company committed to positive sourcing, transparent business practices, and unrelenting inclusivity. Creativity and innovation run throughout all aspects of his e-commerce brand, from the custom designs to the clever automation systems which keep projects on track across three studios.
